If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. I'm here to help you succeed and learn. You can ask me in class, during office hours, or send me an email.

Here is a guide if you have never considered what a professional email should contain.
https://www.insidehighered.com/views/2015/04/16/advice-students-so-they-dont-sound-silly-emails-essay
Be sure to greet me and sign your email. I look forward to hearing from you.
You will have the semester to work on the two projects below:
•The Technical Project is due at the beginning of class Week 15.
•The Final Project is due beginning of class Finals Week.
I am here to help, guide, and brainstorm ideas with you. Be sure to ask questions and seek assistance—don't wait until the last minute.
Assignment: The Technical Project
https://drive.google.com/file/d/164fi5VGuT62joERxOOmnItfcdvlTiClM/view?usp=sharing
Video: https://youtu.be/y844IGiuzU0
The Technical Project will be submitted as an Adobe Portfolio Gallery or Adobe Express Portfolio Presentation. You can use images from any assignment or shoot new ones to meet the project goals. All images must be taken this semester, have embedded metadata, and be photographed by you.
Assignment: Final Project/Series
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bTLF_5If8N6iK16OiPzHH6mEOyIlooGS/view?usp=sharing
Video: https://youtu.be/W78icVXX8yo
The Final Series should be created over multiple shoots, not just one. All images must be made by you during this semester and cannot be submitted for another class or project. Why multiple shoots? This approach allows you to build on your concept, grow, and enhance your ideas over time. Start early on this project to maximize its potential.
Week 2 - August 31, 2025 - September 06, 2025
WEEKLY QUIZ - Cannot be made up if missed. You will find the Quiz in Canvas.
Complete in Canvas (No make-ups) Complete by September 06, 2025 11:59PM.
Quizzes are worth 4 points each and help keep you on track every week. Quiz questions are derived from classroom participation, readings, and videos. Weekly image and editing projects range from 10 to 25 points each. These projects offer hands-on, practical exploration of the tools and involve both conceptual and technical investigations. The more images you create each week, the sharper your photographic eye will become. Practice, reflection, experimentation, and investigation form the foundation for creating interesting and thought-provoking images.

There's a lot of information to cover, so I recommend printing out all assignments. Read them thoroughly, highlight key points, and review them regularly. This will help you stay organized and retain important details.

Be sure to use the Lightroom Mobile Camera in Professional Mode and explore its features. If you are using a DSLR or mirrorless camera, make sure to shoot in Manual Mode.
•If you take images at night, in the dark, or in an indoor space, you will receive a zero. Make sure to get outside into the light for your photography assignment.

What is photography? The word “photography” literally means “drawing with light”. The word was supposedly first coined by the British scientist Sir John Herschel in 1839 from the Greek words phos, (genitive: phōtós) meaning “light”, and graphê meaning “drawing or writing”

Terry Barrett's Principles:
Description – What do you see?
Focus on the factual details of the image: subject matter, color, lighting, composition, and other visual elements. Be objective.
Interpretation – What does it mean?
Consider the possible meanings or themes of the image. What story or message is being conveyed? How do the visual elements support this?
Evaluation – How effective is it?
Assess the strengths and weaknesses of the image. Does it successfully convey the intended message or concept? What could be improved?

Extra Credit: ISO Exploration – 5 Points
Due: Next Week
Submit your work through Canvas before the start of next week’s class.
Instructions:
1. Photograph one scene while changing your ISO settings:
• ISO: 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400, 12,800.
• If your camera has a higher ISO setting, include that as well.
2. Ensure proper exposure for each ISO setting.
3. File Naming:
• Name each file with the corresponding ISO (e.g., ISO_100, ISO_200, etc.).
4. Submission:
• Upload your image files as a Lightroom URL to the extra credit portal in Canvas under ISO Exploration.
• In the comments section, explain what you learned about ISO through this exercise.
Important Notes:
• All submissions must be made by the due date. No late extra credit will be accepted.
• Images must be submitted in the extra credit portal to receive credit.
Pro Tip: Use a tripod to keep the scene consistent and ensure proper focus for all shots. Maintaining the same composition across all ISO settings will help you better understand the impact of ISO on your images.

The Technical Project will be submitted as an Adobe Portfolio gallery or a Lightroom album.
We’ll go over how to use Adobe Portfolio in Week 9, but you should begin gathering your images now.
You may use work from past assignments, or create new images to fulfill the requirements.
Be sure to create a dedicated album or folder so your images are organized and easy to access when it’s time to build your final presentation.

Extra Credit - 5pts - Due next week. Submit through canvas before the start of the next weeks class.
Make an image with a dominant foreground subject.
You want a prominent subject up front, filling the space with a middle and a background supporting the image content. This is different from a close up/macro shot where the viewers eye stays on the subject. With this concept we start with the subject then the viewers eye travels through the frame and back to the subject.
You can also use this image in your technical project.

• Or a Lightroom (LR) Album
You may use images from previous assignments or create new ones specifically for this project.
All images must meet the following criteria:
• Created during this semester
• Photographed by you
• Include embedded metadata
•••Reminder•••
All approved late projects or re-submissions must be turned in before the start of class in Week 15.
Week 16 - December 07, 2025 - December 13, 2025
Final Class Meeting:
Tuesday, December 09 | 10:00 AM – 1:50 PM
Final Project Submission is due by 10:00 AM sharp
We will hold a group critique to share and discuss your Final Projects.
Please arrive on time with your work submitted before class begins.

Assignment: Final Project / Series
Your Final Series must be created through multiple shoots over time, not a single session.
All images must be made this semester and cannot be reused from other classes or projects.

Why multiple shoots?
This approach gives you time to refine your ideas, build stronger visuals, and create a more compelling and cohesive body of work.

Important:
No late projects will be accepted.
Turn in your work early to avoid issues with uploads, internet, printing, or unexpected technical problems.
